Abstract
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) is a medicinal plant that is rich with bioactive substances such as flavonoids, phenols, triterpene saponins, volatile oils and numerous others. Of all bioactive substances isolated from the licorice root extract, the most important are glycyrrhizin and glabridin that have antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) activities and also antiviral activitiy. Numerous scientific studies confirmed the positive effects of licorice root extract against some bacterial strains, strains of fungi and viruses. Current knowledge and the future research should provide more effective treatment of bacterial, fungal and also viral infections and also to replace the current drugs partially or completely.
