Abstract
As the international language in the world, English is used to establish relationship with other countries. English is the first foreign language taught in Indonesian country, and it becomes a compulsory subject in schools Moreover, speaking is the verbal use of language to communicate with others. The purposes for which to communicate with others are so large that they are innumerable. Therefore, in this study the writer was interested in describing the nonlinguistic problems and the strategies to overcome the students’ problems in learning speaking. Descriptive quantitative research was used as design of this study; the population in this study was 241 students and the researchers took about 25% of the population and it was involved 60 students in the second semester students of UMM academic year 20082009 in learning speaking. The data was obtained through the questionnaire for the students. The result of this study showed that the students faced some problems in speaking, particularly in terms of peer pressure, less of motivation and lack of support. Most of the students (68%) faced problem of being afraid of making a lot of mistakes. This problem related to peer pressure. In overcoming with peer pressure problems, the students tried tried to be well prepared. Then the most problems faced by the students (90%) related to less of motivation was the students have a big effort in learning speaking, but they feel less of confident to speak. In overcoming that problem, the students used practice as their strategy in learning speaking. The most problem related with the students’ problem in lack of support was (53%) the students feel the classroom atmosphere did not support the activity in learning speaking. In overcoming the problem, the students tried to be well prepared.
