Abstract

Although light detection and ranging (lidar) has been used for monitoring the world's natural resources since the mid-tolate 1980s, it is still regarded as a relatively recent remote sensing technology. Lidar, which is based on laser technology, can rightly be considered the optical analogue of the better-known ranging technique of radio detection and ranging (radar). A lidar measures a certain quantity of light at a distance to the lidar system.
