Evaluation of a Low-powered 3-cm Radar for Quantitative Rainfall Measurements

Abstract

Accuracy of Radar Areal-Mean Rainfall EstimatesResults of a sampling variance analysis were used to determine the accuracy of radar-indicated areal-mean rainfall depths for 28 storm periods.Fiftyfour percent of these radar rainfall estimates were equal to or better than the accuracy which can be expected with one gage per 100 square miles.The other 46 percent were less accurate than one gage for 100 square miles. Correlation of Surface Rainfall With PPI EchoesA comparison of surface rainfall data with radar observations was made for 10 stations during 15 storms over the Goose Creek network during 1953.It was found that the total duration of rainfall for the 15 storms considerably exceeded the total duration of radar echoes over the 10 stations.Further investigation showed that no echo was present during 51 percent of the time rain was occurring at stations.
