Enamel Matrix Derivative: Emdogain

Abstract

Emdogain consists of the sterilized and lyophilized amelogenin fraction of porcine enamel matrix, dissolved in propylene glycol alginate (PGA). Recession defects treated with Emdogain, in conjunction with the coronally advanced flap (CAF) procedure, exhibited significantly enhanced mean root coverage and keratinized tissue width, smaller areas of exposed root surfaces, and complete root coverage obtained more frequently. Additionally, recession areas treated with Emdogain may heal with true periodontal regeneration via the formation of new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. Thus, addition of Emdogain to the surgical coverage of root recession defects may present a less invasive treatment approach by eliminating the need for graft procurement and, therefore, limiting patient morbidity. Healing in areas of gingival recession treated by coronally advanced flap and Emdogain heal by regeneration of the periodontal attachment apparatus, including alveolar bone, new cementum, and periodontal ligament.
