Abstract

Abstract Assistive technology as defined in P.L. 100-407 and subsequent laws refers to “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off-the-shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.” A university does not have to provide assistive technology if it fundamentally alters the nature of the program or creates an undue financial or administrative burden. The student cannot be charged a fee to use assistive technology provided by the university. Students, however, cannot expect universities to purchase personal devices such as wheelchairs, durable medical equipment, or prosthetic devices. Even so, there are many devices and services that can greatly improve the learning environment of students with disabilities, such as these: recorded texts, note-takers, interpreters, television enlargers, electronic readers, computer keyboards with large buttons, and reaching devices for library use.
