Abstract
An analytical procedure is developed for the design of a nonaxisymmetric shroud with a prescribed circumferential and chordwise pressure distribution in uniform flow. Computations are made for two shrouds; one designed to operate in uniform flow, and the other 'adapted' to an existing propeller. Model tests of both shrouds conducted in the MIT Variable Pressure Tunnel are analyzed. These measurements include forces on both shroud and propeller. The results indicate that large lift coefficients can be developed by such a device with lift/drag ratios superior to conventional rudders, and show good agreement with theoretically predicted lift.
