In many metal sliding systems the designer aims at hydrodynamic or elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL). Bearing pressures in the former are relatively low (about 1 MPa), so bearing surfaces do not deform; lubrication depends upon the lubricant having a sufficiently high viscosity to prevent surfaces from touching.
