Abstract

Sex is good for our physical and mental health, a vital part of most relationships and an intrinsic aspect of what it means to be human. It is therefore important that help is offered to people who experience sexual difficulties and Psychosexual Therapy provides a valuable treatment option. However, in the UK availability of NHS provision varies widely so the aim of this chapter is to encourage all clinicians to help their patients address any sexual issues that arise. Early intervention can prevent longer term more complex sexual problems developing and reduce the need for more intensive therapy. This chapter offers an insight into the practice and principles of sex therapy with case examples to illustrate some of the behavioural strategies commonly employed with men who experience erectile dysfunction, premature and delayed ejaculation. Finally, Annon's hierarchical model is discussed as this provides a useful framework that can be utilised in a variety of clinical specialities.
