Bernard H Lavenda 1978 London: Macmillan xv + 182 pp price £12.50 Ideally this book should be reviewed by some learned gentleman who will first enunciate the main types of irreversible thermodynamics. These are: Onsagerism or linear thermodynamics, or nonequilibrium thermodynamics (e.g. de Groot, Mazur); rational thermodynamics (Coleman, Eringen, Truesdell); generalised thermodynamics (Glansdorff, Prigogine); nonlinear thermodynamics (to which the above authors and Lavenda have contributed); nonequilibrium variational principles (Gyarmati, Lavenda, Prigogine); quasi-thermodynamic stability theory (Liapounov, Poincar6); field thermodynamics (Lavenda); continuum thermodynamics (Eckart, Whitham).
