Abstract
A study was made to determine the effect of in vitro hemolysis on the ratio of lactate dehydrogenase (LD) isoenzyme 1 to lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme 2 (LD1/LD2). Electrophoreses were performed to determine the LD isoenzymes on 40 serum samples before and after hemolysis. Free hemoglobin determinations and total lactate dehydrogenase determinations were done on the hemolysates. Considering all samples, there was no difference in the means of the ratios of the clear (unhemolyzed) to the hemolyzed. But, if one regards the extent of the hemolysis in the sample or whether there is an increase in the LD1/LD2 ratio in the unhemolyzed sample, the hemolysis did cause the LD1/LD2 ratio to be lowered.
