Aerial Counts of Waterbirds on Narran Lake, New South Wales

Fourteen aerial counts of waterbirds on Narran Lake showed that up to 39 000 birds were present in the summer and autumn following inundation. The associated wetlands on the northern side of the lake provide a broad range of waterbird nesting-sites. The Narran Lake-Clear Lake complex form s an important area for the conservation of waterbirds in New South Wales. That it is relatively undisturbed and is subject to a summer flooding regime heightens its value . The importance of the sys tem to Palearctic and other waders should be investigated.
