Identification, geographic distribution and floristic affinity of pteridophytes on the north eastern slope of Mt. Banahaw de Lucban, Sierra Madre Mountain range, Quezon (Luzon Island) Philippines

Abstract

The study aimed to start localized studies on identification of the pteridophytes on the northeastern slopes of Mt. Banahaw de Lucban, Sierra Madre mountain range in Lucban, Quezon, and Luzon Island, Philippines. It is also attempted to examine the world geographical distribution and floristic affinities of these pteridophytes. The line intercept method of vegetation sampling was used to inventory the populations from 700-1875 meters above sea level(m.a.s.l). Sampling sites were established every 100m rise in altitude. Results revealed ninety-five(95) pteridophyte populations comprising 10 varieties in 93 species, 47 genera and 24 families. Eighty-three species were true ferns and 10 were fern allies. Twelve populations (12.6%) are endemic to the Philippines. Twenty-eight(29.5%) are Malesian endemica while three(3.2%) are distributed from Malesian to the Pacific region. Majority of the populations (33 spp. or 34.7%) are Pan-Asiatic in distribution. Only four (4.2%) are mainly Asiatic while the rest are Paleotropic(7 or 7.4% and Pantropic (8 or 8.4%). Floristic affinity with West Malesia (Borneo) and East Malesia (Celebes) is exhibited. A more extensive botanical exploration is necessary in other parts of Mt. Banahaw de Lucban and the Sierra Madre mountain range to confirm the populations geographic distribution and affinity of its pteridophytic flora.
