Abstract
Electrical discharges in gases originate when conditions permit the development of ionization. Such ionization can occur in pressurized gases when electric fields cause free electrons to gain sufficient energy between impacts with gas molecules. The progressive development of field-driven ionization, the electron avalanche, increases or decreases along the path to the anode according to the field intensity.
