Abstract

We present the theory and numerical simulations of the performance of an X-ray free electron laser in the amplified spontaneous-emission mode with an optical-klystron undulator configuration. This device can produce picosecond pulses of high brightness with a significantly shorter undulator than a conventional FEL.
