Monitoring the quality of production process using CUSUM control chart

Abstract

In the production process control, control charts are an important statistical technique which provides continuous monitoring of process quality and timely detection of defects. Shewhart control charts are commonly used to detect major disturbances in parameters of the observed process, while CUSUM charts are more designed for monitoring small and moderate changes. In this sense, CUSUM charts, with respect to their characteristics, can successfully replace the traditional application of Shewhart control charts in business. Its main advantage is that the interval of sampling is treated in the continuous mode, unlike Shewhart charts where it is treated in the isolated manner. Since it combines information from different samples, cumulative sum control charts are more efficient than Shewhart control charts in detecting small shifts in the process. Precisely, this advantage in the application of CUSUM control charts compared to Shewhart control charts is confirmed in the paper through the simultaneous analysis of the performances of both approaches on selected data.
