New records of albinism in two elasmobranchs: the tiger shark Galeocerdo cuvier and the giant electric ray Narcine entemedor

Abstract

A completely albino embryo of the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) was found in the uterus of a female captured off the Revillagigedo Islands (Pacific Ocean, Mexico). The albino embryo was a male measuring 62 cm in total length. A partially albino giant electric ray (Narcine entemedor) was caught in Almejas Bay (Baja California Sur, Mexico). The specimen was a mature female measuring 69 cm in total length. This is the first reported case of albinism in N. entemedor and the second in G. cuvier.
