Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of anti-spasticity therapeutic apparatus on the treatment of upper limb spasticity after stroke. Methods Forty patients with cerebral stroke were randomly divided into control group and treatment group.Patients in the control group were treated with conventional rehabilitation therapy, while those of treatment group received anti-spasticity therapeutic apparatus therapy besides conventional rehabilitation therapy. The Modified Ashworth Scale(MAS),Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and the simplified Fugl-Meyer scale ( FMA) were employed to evaluate the muscle tone of the upper limb, pain degree and the function of upper limb movement in the two groups before and 30 days after treatment. Results No statistically significant differences were found in clinical assessments ( MAS grade, VAS score and FMA score ) before treatment between the two groups ( P>0.05) .MAS grade and VAS score of all patients in two groups were significantly lower than that before treatment ( P<0.05) , and MAS grade and VAS score decreased more in the treatment group than that of control group. There were significant improvement of the FMA score in the two groups after treatment, and the treatment group improved more obviously than the control group. Conclusion Anti-spasticity therapeutic apparatus can effectively reduce the spasm degree of biceps brachii, relieve pain and improve the motor function in cerebral stroke patients.
