Abstract

SYNOPSIS Heating of office buildings presents special problems for the Heating Engineer because, whilst they are generally intermittently heated, some areas may require to be heated at additional times. High insulation levels applied to the building fabric will save energy but may not be as cost-effective as other conservation measures. It is important with office buildings to consider not only insulation levels but also plant application and performance. This paper describes a computer study which was carried out on four office buildings to assess the potential for energy saving by means of increased insulation levels and on the cost-effectiveness of such measures. Other approaches which could be more cost-effective are also discussed. The paper considers heating and service hot water but does not cover air conditioned or mechanically ventilated buildings.
