Abstract
Graft copolymerisation of water soluble monomers such as acrylic acid and acrylamide onto polyamide film by mutual irradiation in aqueous medium in air has been studied. Percentage grafting has been determined as a function of (1) total dose, (2) monomer concentration, and (3) amount of water. Maximum percentage grafting under optimum conditions was found to be higher for acrylamide than acrylic acid. The effect of alcohols of different chain length on percentage grafting has also been studied. All the alcohols enhanced percentage grafting of acrylic acid and decreased percentage grafting of acrylamide. The graft copolymers were characterised by I.R. spectroscopic methods and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A mechanism is suggested to explain the experimental results.
