Although geological mapping is one of the fundamental procedure in geological study, the mapping process is algorithmically very complicated. So the process is analyzed from the view point of data transformation for the purpose of establishement of automatic mapping with the computer.The mapping process is divided into three steps. First step is data sampling, that is, the observation and measurement of geological information in the field. The results are expressed in geological route maps or drilling logs. The second step is the constructing of a geological model. The algorithm from field data to the model is considered to be most esssential and very complicated through the process. The final step is data expressing as a geo1ogical map.Geological map is generally regarded as a visual expression of a geological model. Through these steps, geological information is successively transformed step by step. Not only individual data value but also amount of error, scale, probability, and fuzzyness of data are also transformed.
