Nasal swabs from 64 growing and 40 finishing pigs from four farms were examined for Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida in relation to the morbidity of atrophic rhinitis (AR) and the severity of turbinate atrophy. B. bronchiseptica was isolated from 30, 25, 54.2 and 11.5% of cases examined in A, B, C and D farms, respectively. The toxigenic P. multocida was isolated from 23.3, 0, 25 and 61.5% of cases examined, while the nontoxigenic organism was from 26.7, 83.3, 66.7 and 53.8% in farms A, B, C and D, respectively. The symptoms as well as the extent of AR lesions were less severe in farm B and the most severe in farm D, indicating that the severity of AR was in parallel with the isolation rate of the toxigenic P. multocida.
