The behavior of under-film corrosion of zinc and zinc alloy coated steel sheets for automobiles in cyclic wet and dry environments was investigated by EPMA and X-ray diffraction. It is recognized that a deteriorated corrosion intermediate of zinc and zinc alloy coatings due to attacking by chlorine ion was formed between a sound coating and corrosion products under paint → regandless of a variety of coatings. On the other hand, the final corrosion products of coating observed were ZnCl2·4Zn (OH)2, ZnO, Zn(OH)2.Therefore, it was considered that zinc in the coatings is transformed once into chloride and subsequently the chloride is transformed into ZnCl2·4Zn(OH)2, ZnO, Zn(OH)2.As a result it was found that corrosion resistance of zinc and zinc alloy coated steel sheet was attributable to resistance to attacking by chlorine ion.
