Pedestrian Information System in the Function of Empowerment of City Identity

The purpose of this paper is in presenting the potential of immediate pedestrian environment that contribute in the construction of the identity of the city. The proposed approach is based on the conclusions of the research on the communications potential of the city and its unique and redundant artefacts. Special attention of this paper is given to pedestrian information system that belongs to the category of urban furniture and the effects of its implementation in cities. This research puts in evidence the importance of urban furniture in generating distinctive physical identity of the city. In addition, the contemporary approach in designing and improving urban furniture highlights the potential for redundant artefacts to contribute in creating an smart city and the way the city is used by its inhabitants and visitors. The outcomes of this paper are in emphasizing the importance of the elements of the physical environment in the city that are in the direct contact with pedestrians. In addition the pedestrian information system can be seen as navigational system that help pedestrians determine where they are and where they need to go to reach a destination. On the other side it has its own identity that can also contribute to the identity of the city as whole.
