Abstract
Extract Hyperventilation syndrome Syndrome characterized by a variety of somatic symptoms induced by inappropriate hyperventilation and reproduced in whole or part by voluntary hyperventilation. Rapid shallow breathing leads to hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis which in turn leads to physical symptoms. There is usually inadequate expiration causing symptoms of chest tightness. These symptoms in turn lead to an increase in anxiety and the development of a ‘vicious circle’. Should be distinguished from tachypnoea (an increase in respiratory frequency) and hyperpnoea (an increase in minute ventilation). Presentation ... Differential diagnosis ... Investigations Need to exclude organic pathology. ... Management ... If symptoms do not settle reconsider organic pathology.
