Abstract

Lower extremity varicose veins are frequently seen in general population. It could be managed conservatively or surgically. Sclerotherapy has been shown to be effective in conservative management of varicose veins by causing chemical phlebitis and obliteration of varicosities. In 25 outpatient cases we have used sclerotherapy with polidocanol. This procedure was found to be effective in eradication of all varicosities and no significant complication was observed. The procedure was short and cost effective compared with others. There were no statistically significant difference in biochemical procedures studied. Consequently, our clinical experience suggests that treating the lower extremity varicose veins with polidocanol sclerotherapy is an effective, safe procedure and can be an alternative to surgical approaches.
