Education through the Arts - an Integrated Approach

The author believes the global education system must be restructured to include a greater focus on the arts and thus provide every student with the opportunity for aesthetic experience. The emphasis on academic subjects in the existing education system fails to prepare students for the intellectual, spiritual and aesthetic challenges of life in the 21st century. He cites the case of the experimental Sarah Lawrence College located near New York City, USA, where the creative arts are central to the curriculum. Three examples of projects undertaken by the College faculty and students illustrate the importance of incorporating the arts into the education system.
