Abstract

The authors seek a solution to the problem of the large variation in the rules among classification societies on the strength of ship bow structure. They propose a practical formula for estimating the hydrodynamic loads on the bottom, sides and in the vicinity of the forestem of full form ships, drawing upon a considerable amount of published data and performing a probabilistic analysis for long-term service conditions on several ocean routes. Application of some modified formulations to the design rule requirements is explained and illustrated.
