SummaryThe phenomena of platelet aggregation and adhesions, which are important in haemostasis and thrombosis, have been studied by many investigators without much success. It is hypothesised that platelet aggregation is mediated by an excess binding between platelets and glycoproteins and platelet adhesion to surfaces occurs through the formation of complex bridges between platelets and adsorbed glycoproteins. We have studied the interactions of oligosaccharide groups in fibrinogen and gamma globulins with platelets. The results provide evidence for the involvement of platelet-protein reactions in platelet aggregation and adhesion to surfaces.
