Abstract
‘Landscape planning’ attempts to define the relationship between design and planning in landscape architecture. Designated and protected landscapes range from national parks to wetlands and UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Ian McHarg was concerned about unprotected development and devised a method of taking natural processes and values into account—landscape suitability analysis—which relied on extensive gathering and manipulation of physiographic, climatic, and geological data and could produce suitability maps, usually zoned for agriculture, forestry, recreation, and urban development. The European Landscape Convention (2000), Environmental Impact Assessment, and Visual Impact Assessment are explained and the benefits of green infrastructure planning described.
