Abstract

In one of the Economist Intelligence Unit reports regarding industry-university research links, it is found that the close relations between industry and the academe are to be considered as something good. While the proximity attributed to these relations is found to be unprecedented, removing the institutional barriers would advance the potential for an expansion of these relations. This chapter attempts to establish the themes to be used in this study through identifying the recent trends regarding the reasons for the increase in funds for government and academic research. As the chapter is able to look into the framework of UK policy that concerns an industry-PSR linkage and provide a description about fundamental policy measures, the chapter also reflects on the institutional implications and the possible limitations to increasing the linkage between industry and public sector research.
