Abstract
The presence of water in a wetland exerts as strong an effect as the lack of water in a desert. Wet-zone vegetation includes plants that are wetland indicators and those with specialized underwater leaves. With their abundant vegetative growth, wetlands support a wide range of animal life, including frogs, turtles, muskrats, and blackbirds. Whether the water is flowing or still, hot or cold, some living things are adapted to live in and near it, and that richness makes wetlands great places for exploration and observation.
