Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tropical moist forests are estimated to cover an area of 11.7 million square kilometres of the humid tropics, where there is abundant rainfall and little seasonality. Tropical dry forests occur in areas of the tropics with seasonal drought caused by a long dry season, and cover about 2.5 million km2 (Groombridge and Jenkins, 2002).
