Abstract

Abstract Compared to the International Tribunals for former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, the creation of a Management Committee for the Special Court in Sierra Leone — comprising representatives of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General and the government of Sierra Leone, as well as important political and financial sponsors of the Court — is a major innovation. It is the first attempt to establish and manage a tribunal with the direct involvement, not only of the UN, but also of the state on whose territory the crimes were committed, and the donor community. This chapter provides an overview of the process that led to the establishment of the Special Court's Management Committee, the role it plays, and its future challenges.
