Placemaking in urban design

After decades of urban planning policies geared towards facilitating the movement of automobiles and imposing order and development from the top down, a broader bottom-up approach to communitybuilding is taking hold globally. This approach, which we refer to as Placemaking, is geared toward the “ground fl oor” of a city – streets, sidewalks, parks, buildings and other public spaces. Simply, Placemaking aims to create places in cities that can invite greater interaction among people, while fostering healthier and more economically viable communities.
