Abstract This chapter discusses the results of economic analyses of regional trade agreements (RTA). The recent proliferation of RTA poses a number of interesting and difficult questions for economists. These questions are concerned with the reasons and motivations for the increasing number of RTA and whether it is welfare-improving. The analyses reveal that RTA are often not long term, most RTA are mainly in free trade areas, and the World Trade Organization (WTO) is implicated in the growth of RTA.
