Abstract
Disease and pestilence have been the starting points for city planning in India. Several global cities have witnessed this phenomenon. Metropolitan planning is a long journey from these morbid beginnings. Yet the distance has been covered through increasing trade and commerce across the countries, of population growth and expanding urban spaces. This chapter discusses the Indian experience of urban regional planning, which started with the formation of the Calcutta Metropolitan Planning Organisation (CMPO) in 1961.
