Abstract

This chapter discusses the housing problem in London during the early 20th century. It looks at the steps London County Council (LCC) took in order to solve the problem, such as planning the largest housing estate in the middle of Essex. The LCC's experiences in building cottage estates since 1900 helped them shape their ideas about the Becontree Estate. The chapter begins by examining the housing problem, followed by the developments of London housing before 1914. The latter part then focuses on the development and construction of the Becontree Estate.
