Abstract

Ada may be expected to become an important language for portable programming within a few years, but as yet there is little practical experience of Ada programming. This survey of potential problem areas in portable Ada programming endeavours to explain the tricky areas in terms of compromises within the language design between portability and efficiency. The approach to arithmetic portability is particularly interesting: Ada is the first major language whose numeric capabilities are specified in terms of model arithmetic.
