The Conventions of Ministerial Resignations: The Queensland Coalition Crisis of 1983

Australian politics, both state and federal, have been characterised by long periods in office of one government. Queensland is no exception. There have been only two changes in the political colour of its government in over half a century — in 1957, when the long-serving Labor Government split and fell, to be replaced by a coalition of the Country (later National) and Liberal parties; and in 1983, when that 26-year-old coalition split and was replaced by a National Party government which, two elections on, is still in office.
