Abstract

This chapter first describes the seventy-five-year evolution of the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) System, with special attention to the various issues it faces. It then analyzes recent expansion of the FHLB's activities in issuing standby letters of credit (SLOCs). It also considers the role of the FHLB System during the current financial crisis.
