Devolution and Public Policy 1958–81

This chapter deals with devolution and public policies on the Isle of Man during the period 1958–81. It first addresses the modifications to the franchise and looks at the qualifications for being a candidate in the elections of 1962, 1966, 1971 and 1976. It discusses expansions in social security, education, health, housing and employment policies. The intervention for development and the adoption of a radically new approach to the funding of capital projects on the Isle of Man is addressed. The policies on taxation and diversification on the Island are also examined, which helped transform the Manx economy. The economic growth discussed in this chapter brought social tensions and demands for government action to mitigate its worst effects.
