Nonfood Uses of Eggs

A most significant use of chicken eggs is by hatcheries for the production of a new life for broiler meat and layers of shell eggs for human consumption. Some of the non-food uses of eggs have been superseded by products of the same technology that were initially dependent upon the use of egg products. Many of the uses of inedible eggs were summarized by the US Department of Agriculture. The combination of changes in marketing outlets for egg products and changes in environmental requirements on the egg industry have resulted in more emphasis being placed on development of non-food uses and egg-industry by-products. Pet foods, shampoos, and vaccine production account for the majority of the non-food uses for eggs. Most uses of eggs by domestic animals are related to replacement of feedstuffs. One of the more interesting non-food uses of egg products is the animal repellent-attractant use described by R. W. Bullard et al.
