The Mystical Dimensions of Buddhism

This chapter focuses on “Buddhism and Mysticism,” approaching the topic from theoretical and praxical perspectives. It attempts to make sense of the highly complex and somewhat esoteric world of Buddhist meditation techniques, showing how they fall within the scope of the study of mysticism. It also sheds light on the inner logic of the Buddhist mystical traditions for the sake of instructors who do not have specialized training in the study of Buddhism. It does so in a historical-critical fashion, showing the organic development of Buddhist meditation techniques over time. The chapter includes a short discussion of the appropriateness of including Buddhism within the scope of mystical studies. The chapter also discusses Buddhist mystical techniques and practices, offering specific pedagogical strategies for communicating this material to the student. The chapter includes a detailed bibliography and sample syllabus.
