Abstract

This chapter discusses the excavations of three major British sites that revealed evidence of Paleolithic ritual: the Goat's Hole cave at Paviland, Creswell Crags, and Gough's Cave in Cheddar Gorge. It also presents evidence of ritual behaviour in Mesolithic Europe. Among the excavated sites, the Aveline's Hole burials have the largest assemblage of Mesolithic human remains in Britain and one of the most important in Europe.
