Abstract
This chapter examines the commitment of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to the principle of broadcasting as a public service. It explains J.C.W. Reith's opinion that the public service aspect of broadcasting had four facets. These include the operation of BBC for making money not for the sake of profits, national coverage, and unified control. This chapter also discusses the series of negotiations between Reith and the British Post Office concerning the finances of BBC.
