Abstract
A valid concept of the nature of soil must avoid the common error that soil is simply a mixture of unconsolidated material, resulting from the weathering processes of underlying rocks. Soil is a natural body, having both mineral and organic components in addition to physical, chemical, and biological properties. Soil properties, therefore, cannot be a simple re ection of the combined properties of all soil components.
