Abstract
This chapter lays the groundwork for the first part of the study concerning the politics of the films selected. It investigates to what extent context is embedded in the films and productive of what we usually call a subtext. An analysis of the eight films shows that the central contextual elements in the 1970s films and the 2000s remakes appear to be, respectively, economics and war.
