Abstract

Managing performance in an organisation is a stimulating task. Performance management touches upon and affects each and every activity across the organisation. Diagnosing the literal reason(s) responsible for poor performance is a painstaking task; however once, it/they is/are identified correctly half of the work is done. Performance in an organisation can include individual as well as the organisational performance. Performancemanagement systems in an organisation can either make or mar performance effectiveness. Effectual performance management on one hand fetches laurels to the organisation and take it to the greater heights, whereas poor performance management on the other spoils the image of the organisation in the eyes of the beholder. Several questions as what is performance management, why performance management, how performance management, by whom performance management, what hampers performance management and what boosts it up and others crop up in mind. All these questions need to be addressed and answered. This paper is an unpretentious effort to portray the picture of performance management in an organisation. The term performance management will be learnt with the help of formulas and models. The paper makes an endeavour to address and answer the given questions. Role of academic and industrial interaction in effective performance management will also be considered. Besides, the paper puts forward workable recommendations and proposes a performance-management compliance checklist to improve upon the quality of performance-management systems in an organisation. The efforts made through the paper will certainly facilitate individual employees as well as organisations in managing their performance meaningfully and making the organisational image shine in the eyes of the stakeholders.
