Early Aspirin for Acute Ischemic Stroke

Abstract This chapter provides a summary of a landmark study in vascular neurology. Is early aspirin use an effective treatment for acute ischemic stroke? Starting with that question, it describes the basics of the study, including funding, study location, who was studied, how many patients, study design, study intervention, follow-up, endpoints, results, and criticism and limitations. In patients with acute ischemic stroke, a medium dose of aspirin daily is effective at reducing mortality and the risk for recurrent ischemic stroke, though the absolute benefits are modest. The chapter briefly reviews other relevant studies and information, and concludes with a relevant clinical case.
